I joined the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (aka SCBWI) in April of 2021. Since then, I’ve used quite a few resources on their website. So, I thought I’d share some of my favorites, in case you’re new to the group or are considering joining but don’t know if it’s worth the annual fee (hint, it is).
Regional Chapters
I’m part of the Florida region. Through this page on the site, I found my first critique partner. There weren’t any online critique groups looking for new members, but through Mindy’s connections (she’s the Critique Group Coordinator for Florida), I gained a partner. And through this partner, I gained a critique group. So, definitely my favorite resource. Check out your own regional chapter to see about finding a critique group. Look at the free webinars they have posted on the site. Find out about events they are hosting. I did Florida’s Critique-a-Palooza this summer. I was able to get feedback on one manuscript from a literary agent. Overall, the first resource you should check out once you’ve signed up.
The Book & The Bulletin
Yes, that’s what it’s called. As a SCBWI member, you get access to “The Book,” which has tons of information on agents and publishers, plus other helpful articles and resource lists. Download the PDF and get to reading. There’s also a SCBWI Bulletin, which is also worth the read.
Blueboard
This is a discussion forum where you can connect with the kidlit and yalit writing community. Ask for advice, share you publishing wins, find critique partners, and more. I don’t use it too often, but when I first joined, I definitely went through and read out posts, finding a ton of helpful information and tips. I’ve also posted a few times, and usually get at least one response. I plan on being more active on here in the future.
Regional Webinars
While I haven’t attended a paid webinar yet, they are really well priced for members. So, if there’s something you really need help with, check the webinars as potential inexpensive resources. For example, there’s one coming up in September called, “Finding the Perfect Agent.” At a $15 price point, there’s little to lose and a lot to gain.
Awards & Grants
Can’t win an award or grant if you don’t apply. All these awards and grants are free to apply to. There is quite a variety, so definitely see how many you can submit to with your materials.
